Werca’s Folk and VoiceMale

Songs for the Time & the Season

Werca’s Folk and VoiceMale

Friday 20th December, 2024, at 7:30pm (Doors and bar open at 7:00pm)

A repeat of our very popular sell-out concert of December 2023.

This concert brings together two of the foremost choirs in our region. The female voices of Werca’s Folk (led by Sandra Kerr) and the male voices of VoiceMale (led by Jon Doran). They’ll bring you a touch of Christmas along with traditional and contemporary songs of joy, love and hardship. Expect particular emphasis on the rich and varied tradition of our own region together with contemporary material and folk songs from around the World.

Werca’s Folk are named after ‘Werca’, from whom the village of Warkworth derived its name. Described variously as a ‘wild and witchy woman’ and ‘saintly’ … very much like the choir. Known for their passionate singing they have performed all over the country, representing Northumberland at the Royal Show, singing a number of times at The Sage, Gateshead and at the Whitby Folk Festival, and winning the first ever St Oswald’s Choir of the Year in 2011 which saw them fund-raising during the following year for St Oswald’s Hospice in Newcastle-upon-Tyne.

Voice Male came into being following an initiative by 20,000 Voices in January 2001. It came in to being under the leadership of Sandra Kerr. A few years down the line the baton was passed to Graham Stacy who ably and inspiringly led the choir until his retirement in 2021. The baton was then handed on to a young and highly respected Folk musician Jon Doran.
